Rendezvous Point biography
Founded in Kristiansand, Norway in 2010

The musicians in RENDEZVOUS POINT met when they studied rhythmical music at the University of Agder. In 2012 the band was titled the most promising band in southern Norway and held a concert with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. They have released their first album ''Solar Storm'' in fall 2015. The band consists of Baard KOLSTAD on drums (LEPROUS, BORKNAGAR, ICS VORTEX),Petter HALLARAKER on guitar (ICS VORTEX, SOLEFALD), Nicolai Tangen SVENNES on keyboard, Geirmund HANSEN on vocal and Gunn-Hilde ERSTAD on bass.

The band play a melodic progressive metal in the lines of LEPROUS and OPETH with a lot of space left to the vocals and epic arrangements showing the great musicianship of the band.

Rendezvous Point Progressive Metal

Review by alainPP

4 stars 1. Don't Look Up start for the sound with LEPROUS mixed with MUSE; interesting this syncopated synth putting the rhythm on a modern sound 2. Oslo Syndrome for the heavy cottony intro, the sound that gravitates between ambient and hard rock, for the small spatial break that makes a bewitching progressive fade, Petter's guitar solo moves; return to the almost pop rock new wave vitaminized chorus 3. Utopia for the continuation of the intro, like on a concept album; after it is Geirmund who sets the mood with his voice flirting with that of Einar and Fredrik of MARATON 4. Fireflies with the latent intro and the variation recalling the structures of HAKEN; softness and eloquence, energy and progressive variation with this intense djent distilled with finesse; musical oxymoron.

5. Presence for the radio hit with the energy of the guitar and synth riff and the marshmallow rendering of the invasive vocal; a layer of keyboards and Geirmund holds the title with this 'I Can't' hakenien precisely 6. Wildflower good and redundant lacking the pep of the start 7. The Tormented with again a beautiful solemn, majestic heavy djent intro, with a lot of explosive pads from Baard; the phrasing vocal on the destructive riff which rises on a dreamlike crescendo with a rapped air which goes strangely well; mention well to Gunn-Hilde and her roaring bass 8. Still Water for the terminal ballad on the airy piano, Geirmund showing the extent of his talent; the a capella or almost highlighted by the synth for the classico-symphonic crescendo which makes you shiver to the tips of your toes! An easy but moving title which proves that in terms of emotion with new prog metal we can go very far.

4 stars Norwegian band RENDEZVOUS POINT has been in the works since 2010, and the current line-up solidified in 2012, from what I understand. "Solar Storm" is their debut album, released in the fall of 2015 by Karisma Records.

Progressive metal is a genre where most new bands entering the field tend to follow the lead of some heralded band or other. Encountering a new band that opts for a more novel approach is always a good thing when regarded in that context, and the vital, sophisticated material Rendezvous Point presents us with on their debut album is one that merits a check by anyone fond of progressive metal, in my opinion, and in particular by those who tend to be charmed by artists that, by and large, will be described as innovative in this genre.

4 stars A great debut album from a very promising Norwegian band!

I was lucky enough to hear and meet Rendezvous Point when they supported Leprous on their 2015 autumn tour. I'm happy to say that the band sounded just as good live as they did on this very well produced debut album. Speaking of the album, I must start by stating that this is easily one of the best sounding releases that I've heard from an up and coming band. This was actually not such a big surprise once I looked at the back sleeve of the record and noticed that it was mixed and mastered by the great Fascination Street Studios (famous for some of the best sounding records of the last decade by Opeth, Devin Townsend, Pain Of Salvation, Symphony X, Leprous, Katatonia, Haken, Enslaved etc.).

A great sounding album is a good thing but it's not enough if the material and performance aren't equally as satisfying. Luckily Rendezvous Point has all those qualities in place and manages to deliver in both of these categories. The opening track Through The Solar Storm has been clearly inspired by Leprous, which might not be surprising considering that Baard Kolstad is the drummer for both Rendezvous Point and Leprous. But while Leprous tends to sound very calculated and precise in their delivery, there is the element of surprise (or maybe joyful inexperience?) that makes Rendezvous Point sound so fresh to my ears. Wasteland is the album's promotional single and it's another great piece of music that reminds of Leprous but is a lot more melodic in the approach and is, on occasion, flirting with the post metal genre.

Para is the only weaker track for me here, but this is mostly due to the fact that it sounds too much like Dream Theater both in its melodies and the instrumental sections. The Hunger and Mirrors are two tracks that I want to enjoy more than what I actually do but they're great pieces of music none the less. The Conclusion is where we return to the heights that were previously featured on Through The Solar Storm and Wasteland. Divided into parts 1 and 2, this is easily the highlight of this entire album where part 1 serves up the themes while part 2 knocks them out of the park - one great piece of progressive (metal) music!

I highly recommend Solar System to all fans of progressive music and especially those on the heavier side. What you get here is great material combined with great performances and an awesome production to top it all off, what's not to like? I'm definitely gonna keep an eye out for any new material from Rendezvous Point as I'm certain that greatness lies ahead for this young quintet.

***** star songs: Through The Solar Storm (4:50) Wasteland (4:58) The Conclusion Pt. 1 (4:48)

**** star songs: Para (6:23) The Hunger (7:14) Mirrors (10:18) The Conclusion Pt. 2 (5:54)

Thanks to rdtprog for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
