Pure Intention biography
PURE INTENTION was a short-lived progressive metal band from Germany, for which little information is known. The band consisted of Sarah WOHLFAHRT (vocals), Thomas SCHMITTINGER (guitars), Rainer SCHÖNAUER (bass), Michael WILSBERG (drums), and Peter Meier van ESCH (keyboards). In 2002, they self-released their only album ''The ''Soulution'''', which is a very rare piece, and shortly after split up to pursue other musical directions e.g. ESCH supported alternative band CHIEF ROCKAZ for a while. The band had supported DEADSOUL TRIBE live, among others.

The sound of PURE INTENTION is keyboard-driven progressive metal with melodic female vocals, reminiscent of FATES WARNING, DREAM THEATER, ENTWINE and THE GATHERING with some jazz influences, and comes highly recommended to progressive metal fans. Their album was available for free download from their website, which is now defunct.

4 stars Welcome Imperfections

It is an absolute shame when bands disappear into nothingness after having released exceptionally interesting progressive rock albums. And such is the case with German prog-metallers Pure Intention, who, at the time of this review, are probably involved in all sorts of different music projects - at least, I hope so, judging by the quality of The "Soulution".

This is female-fronted progressive metal with a soul. Certainly, due to the own-production back in 2002, the sound is not as pristine as some would expect; the angelic voice of Sarah Wohlfahrt comes out a bit "unpolished" and the creations are not drawing new lines in the sand of progressive metal. Despite the above, the mix of the traditional prog metal moods (Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Shadow Gallery, Sieges Even) of Schmittinger and Esch blend beautifully with the vocal style of Wohlfarhrt that resembles to the magic of The Gathering and produce a very attractive, almost nostalgic, result.

The main strength of the album is built around the two epics - 'Apathy is the Enemy' and the title track - where the keyboards of Esch, resembling Wehrkamp/Ingles and Pinella but with some jazzy touches as well, take a leading role. Further to these, there is a powerful up-tempo instrumental in 'Pictures, When I Close my Eyes' with clear oriental tendencies. The required balance comes with the remainder being totally relaxed and mellow, piano- or acoustic guitar-led. I would prefer to hear more of Sarah's voice in this album, but still the instrumental parts live up to the challenge.

For fans of keyboard-driven, though balanced, progressive metal with inspiring melodies, this rarity is a not-to-be-missed offering. I hope this gets reprinted and remastered.

4 (-) stars. Highlight: The "Soulution"
