4 stars 'The Drapery Falls' - Opeth (Single)

Since having become one of my favourite bands over the years, it is pretty significant that Opeth's song 'The Drapery Falls' was the first song by the band I ecver listened to, as well as the song that really got me interested in this band. Coming off of the now-classic 'Blackwater Park' LP, Opeth's performance and writing here are fairly representative of what they are all about as a band; dynamics between heaviness and mellow acoustics, strong melodies, and a strikingly beautiful take on the genre known as death metal. Since getting into the band through this album, I have heard better things from them, but 'The Drapery Falls' remains a very important song in my musical development, and I appreciate it accordingly.

The music here has been cut in half for the sake of a radio single, but the essence of the composition is thankfully left intact. 'The Drapery Falls' revolves around a strong and powerful theme that pops up during many of the heavier breaks. Also notable is the powerful buildup of acoustic guitars and Mikael Akerfeldt's vocal performance here, which is among his best. The whole song gives off a dark and eerie feeling, but it is very melodic and surprisingly accessible. Although the uncut version gives more time for the musical ideas here to ferment and grow, this promo for 'Blackwater Park' does succeed at sparking a listener's interest.
