Apricot Rail biography
Definitely one of the best new pos-rock bands, APRICOT RAIL hails from Perth, Australia. The band was started by guitarist Ambrose Nock who was joined by guitarist Jack Quirck, drummer Matthew Saville and bassist Daniel Burt. An exquisite array of instruments for their musical project was completed with the joining of clarinetist/flutist Mayuka Juber after their debut gig in March 2008. After an underground success with their first demo recording and a consistent series of concerts as a supporting act, the band recorded their first proper album in autumn of 2008, later to be released by Hidden Shoal Recordings in 2009.

The music of APRICOT RAIL is a unique mix of guitar-lead classic post-rock a la MONO and MOGWAI, extra percussion and, surprisingly maybe, a wind section consisting of clarinet and flute. This latter component provides versatility to the music, ranging from ethereal moments reminding of KAYO DOT, TARTAR LAMB and LP, to pastoral moments reminding of HYDRIA SPACEFOLK and to powerful free-jazz moments (KAMMERFLIMMER KOLLEKTIEF springs to mind). TORTOISE may be referenced with the use of percussives, and sparse appearances of a strings section used unlike in the rest of post-rock bring even more eclecticism and refinement to the music. Delicate, melancholic singing comes to set the purpose of this creative unit as a search for ultimate aesthetic beauty rather than formal experiment. The musical landscapes created by all this are at times delicate and charming, or majestic and powerful, and always highly emotional.
In conclusion, APRICOT RAIL is highly recommended to those searching for melancholic, beautiful music and a highly refined musical content at the same time.
