3 stars Whereas I do acknowledge the sweeping energy of this early Mahavishnu Orchestra album, I have to say that sometimes too much of a good thing is not a such a good thing after all.

I used to like Mahavishnu Orchestra quite a bit, but over time I have gradually lost interest in listening to their early albums. What impressed me as "fresh and lively" in the past, now strikes me as distastefully chaotic and at time psychotic. Yes, I mean McLaughlin's screechy guitar and Goodman's unruly violin. Cobham's hysterical drumming seems to be fixated on speed and unbridled power, with a lot less focus on sculpting the music.

I wouldn't dare to assign the Visions a really low rating because of the respect I have for their innovation and boldness, but I will have to honestly admit: last time I played this album, my overall listening experience was nothing short of unpleasant.
