MATCHING MOLE

Matching Mole's first is truly outstanding. "O Caroline" and "Signed Curtain" are the two sentimental ballad type songs on the album. A lot of die hard prog fans dismiss these as sugary pop. I on the other hand, will not do this. Both of these songs are very sentimental but in the quirky Canterbury way. The fact that you can even say "sentimetal, but in a Canterbury way" shows how brilliant Matching Mole really was; they were creating a whole new language with this album. "Part of the dance" is a Phil Miller composition (the only one on the album) and it is out of this world; there are some very bizarre and intriguing chords being played. "Instant pussy" is a simple little tune, but well played Rhodes "tinkling" keeps you more than interested throughout. "Instant Kitten" is probably my favorite song on the album; there is great organ and a mellotron part at the end that sounds like it came out of the old "Lord of the Flies" movie. "Instant Kitten" shows why Dave Sinclair is the master of the fuzz organ. The organ performance on this song will make you forget all about Sinclair's light-hearted solos in Caravan, it is very brooding and very seductive to say the least. Sinclair is on a completely other trip with this band. "Dedicated To Hugh, But You Weren't Listening" is the only stinker on the album and why I would not rate this album a 5, just alot of jazz noodleing not amounting to anything substantial. "Imediate Curtain" is basically a Mellotron composition. It has a very moody classical feel to it that I really enjoy. Intertwined throughout all these great songs is fizzy, bubbling atmospherics that are almost magical and that add to the prevailing melancholic darkness of the album. I dont think you could say that any other album has a feel like this. Give this album a listen, I guarentee you have never heard anything like it.
