5 stars Following up something like Freak Out! is hard. However Frank gets proggier with this release. Songs are set up in suites and segments, loose concepts are thrown together, and musicianship is raised up a notch. This one's much more enjoyable for those looking for some groovy and fusiony bits. Once again quoting jazz and classical pieces, this one's a bit heavier and stompier than the last album, making it more infectious and fun to listen to. A lot of the humor may be inside jokes from the band, but you really feel at home when Frank starts to write about fake teenage love and calling vegetables. Zappa melodically is going much more into his own realm with jazz-rock and dissonant composition, and his writing covering more social matters. Absolutely Free is a grabbing record, filled with some absolutely amazing songs, some of them foreshadowing Frank completely, some of them foreshadowing jazz-rock/fusion and even punk entirely. Incredibly innovative once again, and much more distinct and personal, Absolutely Free is an incredibly funny, original, and amazing album, not to mention a great deal of the songs on this album have stuck in my head for being so infectious. 9.5/10
