4 stars One of a kind'' (1979, Polydor) is so different and equal at the same time compared to Bruford's debut. Different, because there are absolutely no singing parts in the album, there are no guests and the four-piece core performs the whole album, while there is a definite turn towards a more synth-based enviroment.Equal, because the level of inspiration hasn't fell down a bit, Holdsworth's unique guitar moves remain a certain trademark thoughout the listening, while the strong Canterbury edges are apparent again, Stewart even recalls National Health's days by an Alan Gowen fragment for ''Hell's bell's''.The material is an interplay-rich Prog Fusion amalgam with jazzy drumming, dense interactions and some sort of melodious breaks, starting from atmospheric ambiences and jazzy, piano-driven themes and endimg up in frenetic instrumental Prog and bombastic Fusion with dominant synth- and guitar virtuosities.I really can't choose, which Bruford album is the best of the first pair. While the debut was more of a 70's- grounded effort, this one sounds slightly more modern, but also more compact, tight and technically flawless to the point it gets annoying but not bad annoying. Precious as gold and highly recommended. 4.0
