3 stars It seems like "Stormcock", perhaps the folk proggers choice for best ROY HARPER album, also spurred his move into prog rock territories, with its multi tracked vocals, well multi tracked everything really, production effects, and the embryonic "Have a Cigar" voice as opposed to his more amiable AL STEWART meets DONOVAN pipes. The two longest and best tracks on "LifeMask", prove he is more than ready for such a move, but conversely make the also-rans (apart from "Banks of the Dead") sound like outtakes from the earlier era. "The Lord's Prayer" in particular reminds me of the contemporaneous "Sulle Corde di Ares" by FRANCO BATTIATO, but this was such a creative time that you can insert your own comparison. I just wish I didn't have to listen to the whole tediously preachy preamble every time. It's the music!
