3 stars An album like no other in their respective discography, Rush's 1974 self-titled debut album is the so-called "first taste" of the Canadian power trio - this release is rooted in the band's great fascination with classic rock, and above all, with Led Zeppelin, Cream and Black Sabbath, which are seemingly the biggest influences on Rush's early sound. This is also the sole album with drummer John Rutsey who performs in an inspired, energetic way which is quite suitable for this kind of music. 'Rush' features eight tracks that present a riff-driven sound that had been strongly inspired by several classic Zeppelin tunes. Even Geddy Lee's singing reminisces the style of Robert Plant at times, while Alex Lifeson delivers a tasteful performance that shows how promising the band is in reality. And the listener will find enjoyable numbers like 'Finding My Way', 'Take a Friend', 'In the Mood' and the classic track 'Working Man'. We also get some attempts at longer-form songs with lengths reaching seven minutes in change so all in all, this is a fun debut album that bolsters a style derivative of important rock acts of the early 70s.
