5 stars My favourite GG album, along with Octopus.

1. Pantagruel's Nativity 10/10 - folky jazzy prog, reminiscent of Crimson's Lizard album at times, plus some Tull-like riffery, discordant choral voices, a strong Canterbury Scene vibe. A tasty vibes solo, some rockin' guitar. One of my favourite GG tracks.

2. Edge of Twilight 8/10 - An even more Canterbury-ish piece, reminiscent of Hatfield and the North. Slow, melodic and atmospheric. Some magical Kerry Minnear keyboards. The solo is by timpani and and drums, which is original.

3. The House, the Street, the Room 8/10 - a riffy little number with dizzying changes and lush vocal harmonies. Jazzy noodling reminiscent of early Crimson leads into a ball-bustin' lead solo with some awesome peaks. Somehow Kerry Minnear's baroque keyboards is the glue that binds this rocker together.

4. Acquiring the Taste (1:36) - 7/10 - a brief pastoral atmospheric piece. Beautiful and elegant.

5. Wreck (4:36) - 10/10 This is the best pirate shanty you'll ever hear. It perfectly captures the seafaring subject matter, whether iterated gently or loudy. A really well written and arranged prog song with some tingle-inducing peaks.

6. The Moon Is Down 10/10 - a gentle jazzy intro leads into lush harmonies worthy of Queen or Godley and Creme. Wonderfully melodic and dreamy. The jazzy bridge is sublime - Metheny meets Zappa leading to some really satisfying keyboard work by Minnear.

7. Black Cat (3:51) - 9/10 - a jazzy and natural-feeling 7/8 with a smooth, late night vibe and tasty choral vocals. Somehow it biomes an avant-garde chamber piece with pizzicato violin before returning to the theme.

8. Plain Truth 6/10 - a rocker with an extended violin solo that reminded me of the long jams on Hot Rats.
