4 stars Cinema Show!

After Yes attempted to keep their core progressive sound while trying to sound "relevant" to modern audiences with the Drama LP which was only partly successful Yes basically fell apart. The remaining members Chris Squire and Alan White hooked up with South African Trevor Rabin a talented guitarist/keyboardist who had a bunch of songs written and needed a band. And so the group Cinema was born. Except when original Yes keyboardist Tony and Jon Anderson were invited to join presumably to allow Rabin to concentrate on playing the guitar, the line-up was starting to resemble Yes and the Cinema moniker was dropped and Yes were effectively reborn. The truth of course is that this is a Yes album in name only. This album is pure AOR. Appreciated as such it is actually an excellent recording owing as much to former member Trevor Horn's truly revolutionary production value as erll as Rabins's catchy songs especially "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" which was a substantial hit. The real highlight for me is the short but exhilarating and bombastic instrumental "Cinema" which even garnered the group their first and only Grammy. Apparently the track was originally intended to b part of a 20 minute epic. What could have been!
