This is one of the least popular records Frank ZAPPA ever recorded. None of the songs on this record became a classic or a favorite of the audience so, absolutely a very unknown album even among the ZAPPA regular listeners, but a bad album? Hell no!

"You are what you is" offers a very diverse collection of songs that go from songs that remind the good days of THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION ("Goblin Girl", "Charlie's enormous mouth"), songs that are excellent instrumental passages ("Theme from the 3rd movement of sinister footwear"), songs with jazzy rhythms ("I'm a beautiful guy"), reggae mixed with hard rock ("Beauty knows no pain", "Mudd Club"), some pure Rock songs ("Conehead", "Dumb all over"), etc. (The only song I really don't like is "Harder than your husband", sorry, I'm not a fan of country a-la Willie NELSON kind of music).

In this album, bass player Arthur BARROW and guitar player Steve VAI had just joined the band and their unmistakable playing were very nice additions to the style of the ZAPPA band. So the eighties started good for ZAPPA's music, later he would start recording a bunch of not-so-good records but not here, here we actually have a very heterogenous and entertaining record with excellent little-recognized songs.

SONG RATING: Teen-age wind, 3 Harder than your husband, 2 Doreen, 4 Goblin girl, 4 Theme from the 3rd movement of sinister footwear, 4 Society pages, 3 I'm a beautiful guy, 4 Beauty knows no pain, 4 Charlie's enormous mouth, 4 Any downers? 3 Conehead, 4 You are what you is, 4 Mudd Club, 3 The meek shall inherit nothing, 3 Dumb all over, 4 Heavenly bank account, 3 Suicide chump, 4 Jumbo go away, 5 If only she woulda, 4 Drafted again, 4

AVERAGE: 3.65

PERCENTAGE: 73

ALBUM RATING: 3 stars
