It is important to understand and accept that EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER never were as good as in their first records ever again; "Love beach" is probably the most hated album in ELP's discography but honestly I prefer this record over both volumes of "Works". It is undeniable that the sound on this record is highly oriented to Pop Music much more than to any kind of Rock, but what does this record has to offer?

The songs on the first side of this album are very short and with a total lack of instrumental experimentation; "Canario" is a great instrumental passage that I never get tired of hearing, and for the other songs on the first side I can say that they're not great but at least don't fall into that overexploited cliché of the Old West Saloon of the earliest records of ELP and definitely not that ridiculous attempt of Classic Jazz they made on "Works II".

The B-side of the album is a 20-minute length song called "Memoirs of an officer and a gentleman", alright, it is not "Tarkus" but it is actually a very nice song: it has some very romantic and elegant piano arrangements and an acoustic guitar has a nice presence too. I agree with those who say this is not one of the best albums of ELP but I disagree with those who say this is their worst record: further than the laughable cover that reminds The BEE GEES, is a nice record once you get to catch its hidden treasures.

SONG RATING: All I want is you, 3 Love beach, 3 Taste of my love, 4 The gambler, 3 For you, 3 Canario, 4 Memoirs of an officer and a gentleman, 4

AVERAGE: 3.43

PERCENTAGE: 68.57

ALBUM RATING: 3 stars
