4 stars This was Hawkwinds 3rd album and paved the way for the Space Ritual alive. Brainstorm is a driving acid garage chant of 11 minutes with one of teh best fade outs in musical history.Space is Deep takes us to accoustic territory before a droning heavy break before returning to cerebral synth noises and 12 string guitars. One Change is minimalist ambient space for Del Dettmar. Lord of Light is pre punk punk metal - it grinds phases and distorts before the spiralling accoustic Down Through the Night. Time We Left is a Space Chant with tribal riffs and unique bass lead from Mr Kiliminster. Finally the accoustic Watcher concludes the original Doremi cut with doom and isolation. The bonus material is the nearly succesful Urban Guerilla it's B side Brainbox pollution the single version of Lord of Light and Calverts Ejection fro the 1974 Starfighters album. Doremi is the godfather of grunge and punk all filtered through acid fuelled mixing at the desk and the powerhouse rythmn of Simon King and Lemmy. It wouldn't have had prog rock status in 1972 - Hawkwind were the darker end of the spectrum and this is a black album the paranoia of Brainstorm the isolation of Down Through the Night and warning from the Watcher but it has unique qualities tha influenced many bands to come. The sleeve notes sum it up a collection of Hymns and Space Chants - Barney Bubbles death skeleton warriors with magic mushroom hats and the apocolyptic saucer invasion - this is brutal visionary stuff and classic early Hawkwind on their musical journey.
