3 stars A mediocre album. If there was (or better to say were?) no Dogs on it, it would be an anthem of dullness. I do understand why Wish You Were Here has incredibly high rating. But this one? Marked by absolute musical domination of Waters & based on a classic Orwell's novel, this album includes only one real work of talent, moreover, of genius, Dogs (music by Gilmour, lyrics by Waters). The remaining tracks are drab. OK Pigs On The Wing I & II, both being trifles, are nevertheless quite nice sounding trifles. But Pigs (Three Different Ones) is musically a dead loss. Eleven minutes of nothing. Sheep has its moments but is overall weak, vapid and insipid (just try to listen to it after Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and you'll see, i.e. hear, what I mean!). Well, in brief, no idea why Animals is considered a masterpiece. I give it three stars only for Dogs, the only track written by Gilmour. While the four tracks by Waters deserve, I'd say, from one to minus three stars. The departure of Waters after The Final Cut was really a good fortune for the band. Yes The Wall is an excellent album. But Animals is IM(un)HO just slightly better than The Final Cut.
