Hope for the Dying biography
HOPE FOR THE DYING, from Jonesboro Illinois, formed in November of 2006 with sights set on bringing something different to the table of extreme progressive metal with influences from DIMMU BORGIR, OPETH and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.

In 2008, HOPE FOR THE DYING was featured in HM Magazine's 'Pick-of-the-Litter' section and subsequently inked a deal with the newly resurrected Strike First Records (a division of Facedown Records) and released their debut self-titled full length on November 25 of that year. In the two years following the release of their debut, HOPE FOR THE DYING matured in both their music and their line-up. They released ''Dissimulation'' in the spring of 2011. in 2013 they released their third album ''Aletheia''. They have had numerous line-up changes through the years, especially in the drum and bass seats, with the current formation including three founding members, Jack DANIELS (guitars, vocals), James HOUSEMAN (guitars, vocals), Josh DITTO (lead vocals, keyboards) and Kaleb LUEBCHOW (drums) who joined in May 2013.

4 stars 5th May, 2021: Hope for the Dying - Aletheia (progressive metalcore, 2013)

I actually listened to this quite a bit back in the day, in a post-Human Abstract search to try and find anyone else doing tolerable progressive metalcore. And though this is actually really good, pretty much everything I dislike about it comes from its metalcore roots, so I'm unsure if that qualifies as good for its genre. Still, this is pretty great for a prog fan. They have consistent good riffs and melodies, good skills at structuring, and don't wear their influences too plainly - there are bits of Opeth or The Agonist here, but not enough to make it feel derivative. But so many of the metalcore elements bring it down for me - the bad harsh vocals, the utterly abysmal kick drum sound, the eye-roll-worthy breakdowns. I'm not entirely sure if this would be better without them - then it would be a stock standard prog metal album, but they certainly add nothing to my personal enjoyment.
