Circe Link & Christian Nesmith biography
Circe LINK, along with Christian NESMITH (son of MONKEES Michael NESMITH) has quite a following of youtubers who eat up their tasteful and varied covers. These are overwhelmingly simple acoustic jaunts brought to new life by Nesmith's arrangements and acoustic guitar along with Circe Link's unique but lovely vocals. They had released a few albums of original material, mostly of an indie-pop flavor, which I've also enjoyed even if that's not a favored genre for me.

Among their popular covers were two songs by Yes, so I know they had some appreciation for prog, but even those numbers were stripped down and simplified. So imagine my surprise when they started doing totally legit prog from the more intricate end of the prog spectrum! Adding to the surprise is that it's not the prog-folk one would expect an acoustic based indie-pop outfit to migrate to, but rather serious symphonic prog!

The new album, Arcana, just released this month, should solidify their inclusion on this site under the Symphonic Prog subgenre.

Circe Link & Christian Nesmith Symphonic Prog

Review by BBKron

5 stars Probably the surprise of the Year! Circe Link and Christian Nesmith are a couple that have been making music together (Circe with vocals and Christian all the instruments) for over 20 years (16 albums). In recent years they have become somewhat known for their excellent cover versions of pop, rock, and prog songs (Beatles, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc.) on YouTube. Christian is a multi-instrumentalist and the son of former Monkee and music innovator Michael Nesmith, and Circe has a wonderful voice that adapts to many different styles. Their previous album, Cosmologica (2022), was their first full-on foray into original Prog rock in the classic style, and it was quite good. But this new album far surpasses that one, as it is absolutely fantastic! Although not well-known or appreciated in Prog circles (yet!), this is certainly one of the best Prog albums of the year (or any year)! This is in the classic symphonic Prog tradition and emulates the sounds and styles of classic prog bands, most notably Yes, and also Genesis, Gentle Giant, and others, but is not a copy or imitation. It creates its own vivid original music, with wonderful melodies, vocals, and extended magical instrumental passages. This succeeds where others have struggled (in emulating classic prog) due to the great composition and flawless execution creating inventive and exciting new prog masterworks, certainly reminiscent of the classics, but also bringing its own unique and memorable songs. The album consists of 5 tracks (ranging from 8 to 15 min each), each depicting one of the Major Arcana trump cards from a Tarot Deck, and each creates its own magical journey. Prog fans should not sleep on this one, as it stands among the very best in the symphonic prog realm. If you need convincing, just check out 'The Fool' first, the shortest track, but a masterpiece of melodic prog. Best Tracks: The Fool, The Hanged Man, The Chariot, The Tower, The Magician. Rating: 4.5

Circe Link & Christian Nesmith Symphonic Prog

Review by alainPP

4 stars Circe Link and Christian Nesmith (Circe and Christian Fanpage) is the fusion of a voice that was discovered by chance one night of a full moon... A sound that grabs you by the guts from the first listen

Well, in terms of titles, between the enjoyable over-the-top intro, the long 11-minute track dripping with vintage atmospheres including an ELP-style solo, the fact of bathing in Yes from the 2030s and the best track of the year with "Assignment In Eternity" and this intro that distills a summary of everything you like in prog but didn't dare ask for it, with "God From The Machine" Yessian to the joints... You will have the choice to immerse yourself in this explosive, conceptual and magnificent concept album. Circe Link and Christian Nesmith is an auditory explosion of progressive and progressive rock, the one that persists in every self-respecting group wanting to melt our ears in the absence of our speakers. This album is dangerous, distilling regressive musical landscapes at the level of our cortex to maintain the musical dream; I take one of their sentences in conclusion: "to navigate towards kingdoms of the unnameable noetic sea".

Thanks to rdtprog for the artist addition.
