Lift to Experience biography
When you think of post-rock and shoegaze of the 1990s you think of iconic indie rock albums such as Loveless, Lift Yr Skinny Fists or Soundtracks for the Blind. But an album that has slipped through the cracks and has gained a cult following is like no other from the genres: The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads, a rock opera about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ that casts Texas as the Promised Land. The sound of the album has been best described as a crossover between SPIDERLAND by SLINT and LOVELESS by MY BLOODY VALENTINE. The band is Lift to Experience, formed in 1996 in Denton Texas by vocalist/guitarist Josh T. Pearson, drummer Andy "The Boy" Young, and bassist Josh "The Bear" Browning.

In 2000 they performed at a music festival, where Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde of the dream pop band COCTEAU TWINS witnessed the trio and were so impressed they signed them to their record label the same day. Lift to Experience recorded their album but due to issues with the record label the LP was only released in Europe, though it would eventually pick up traction on the internet and the band would gain a small following. The band broke up after an unsuccessful tour and poor show attendance, and because of this the second part in what would've been a trilogy of albums was cancelled.

Pearson would eventually make solo albums and that would lead into the band being reignited and touring again in 2016 and even a remaster of the album in the following year. The band would be more popular than they ever were, gaining a new wave of fans and recognition, with The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads now being considered one of the greatest and innovative shoegaze/post-rock albums ever.

4 stars 4.5 stars. This is the greatest Christian concept album that I have ever heard. Yes I love my Neal Morse for his lyrics and powerful symphonic sound, but this is on another level. The music is a combination of Shoegaze and Post Rock with these crooning Texas vocals crying out that Jesus is returning, and he's coming to Texas! So get ready to mourn with the entire population(what's left of it) of planet Earth. Every eye will see him. Like lightening flashing from one side of the sky to the other.

This album could not possibly be more epic. No wonder they needed to make it a double disc worth over an hour and a half of music. Well, okay, on that final track they give us 14 1/2 minutes of silence then end it with post rock guitars for the final 4 plus minutes. Why? You don't need the silence to make this even more epic than it is. Losing marks here. And no, this is far from a perfect record, but it's unlike anything I have heard. This Texas trio are not conservative, judgmental Christians, more like alive Christians, living that adventerous life. And waiting, actually waiting, and looking for His return.

There's lots of humour on here, but man, some of those serious passages are so moving. He speaks the lyrics quite a bit, but the man can sing. I like the one picture I saw of him with a "Don't mess with Texas" sticker on his guitar. Lots of angel talk here, and of the coming apocalypse. Of course Texas and Jerusalem get tied into this concept. This has to be heard to be believed. So yes, despite it's flaws this recording is without question part of my "best of" Post Rock list. To have a Christian album that has music that doesn't fail miserably is such a bonus(haha) and a rare thing.

I want to quote the lyrics from the opening track to give you all an insight into their sometimes irreverent, but real world. "This is the story of three Texas boys busy mindin' their own business. When the Angel of the Lord appeared unto them saying: "When the Winston Churchills start firin' their Winston rifles into the sky from the Lone Star State drinkin' their Lone Star beer and smoking their Winston cigarettes you know the time is drawin' nigh when the Son shall be lifted on high". We told them that didn't sound very Sunday-go-ta-meetin. "What do you expect?" they said. "When God calls the crippled deaf and blind to lead the children of Israel to the promised land." The children of Israel?" we asked. "Don't you boys know nothing?- The USA's the center of jerusalem."

I also love that line in "These Are The Days" that says "And I can hardly wait to hear that great trumpet sound, pouring down across the land." Waiting...

Easily 4 stars despite the flaws. This is something.

5 stars Disclaimer: LISTEN TO THE 2017 MIX the quote the band that version is the way "God intended" to sound, the original mix sounds very very flat

The epitome of "don't judge a book by its cover" (although this bling era hip hop style cover has grown on me and i personally wouldn't change it) LTE's "The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads" is one of if not the most groundbreaking and beautiful Post Rock/Shoegaze albums ever made. The album is about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and depicts Texas as the Promised Land, inspired by the Bible's book of Revelations. The songs on the album are connected by a unifying theme and tell a story from song to song. The opening song, "Just as Told," is more of a setup than part of the story, explaining how an angel told a trio that the United States is the center of Jerusalem and the Second Coming. Aswell as the end of the world where Texas is the Promised Land, and a trio of good ol' Texas boys have been tasked by the Good Lord Himself with bringing God's people home in exchange for rock n' roll stardom y'know the usual stuff. The album opens with the track "Just As Was Told" which acts as the set up to this amazing story, the song itself is very SLINT like but with shoegaze effects, i should mention it now this album is very pretty sounding and the drumming is amazing. The next song is a very ethereal piece and is the first instance of Josh's very poetic Christian lyrics although i never really return to this song it's still good and gives the album an interesting flow. Falling From Cloud 9 is easily my favorite track here, the vocals are heavenly and there's a satisfying tempo switch near the 3:20 mark, Waiting To Hit and The Ground So Soft are also very heavenly sounding (no pun intended) and I don't even know were to start these songs (and the rest of the album really) are insane words cant describe how I feel about this record just please do yourself a favor and listen to it

Thanks to gordy for the artist addition.
