The Great Tyrant biography
Founded in Denton, Texas, USA in 2005 - Disbanded in 2010

A Texas-based outfit The GREAT TYRANT were founded as an experimental doom / jazz rock trio by Tommy Wayne ATKINS (bass), John TEAGUE (drums, percussion), and Daron BECK (keyboards, voices) in 2005. For about 5 years they'd created and recorded material amongst some gigs but sadly their creation could not see the light whilst alive. They say the bassist Tommy tragically committed suicide through a battle with technical problems ... the sadness brought their recording and production processes to a halt (John and Daron formed a new rock duo named PINKISH BLACK after Tommy's death in 2010). Their material's come to the real world as an eponymous EP released in 2007 via an independent label Dada Drumming, and two albums "There's A Man In The House" in 2011 via Dada Drumming and "The Trouble With Being Born" in 2015 via Relapse Records.

Review by Harold Needle

4 stars First of all, let me just say that I absolutely adore albums that have their cover art matching the music perfectly. This is definitely the case here!

This US-based keys/drums/bass trio stirs up some gloomy, dark music. The damn heavy bass mixed with dense drumming and vinage keyboards galore creates quite an atmoshpere, reminiscent of some darker Magma tracks. Not too much in terms of avant-garde here, but that's no matter. There is, however, a nice hint of doom metal I'd say, though not as direct. The album isn't too complex, each composition relies on few core ideas without any technical shredding, but that only fits the mood, damn well at that. Misterious vocals are - for the most part - keept in the background, as the instruments tell the tales.

Not a masterpiece by any means, but a fresh and interesting offering indeed - for those who like their music DARK and HEAVY.

Thanks to dAmOxT7942 for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
