Founded in Manchester, UK in 2008

SPIRES is a progressive UK death metal act from Manchester formed in 2008 and initially the brainchild of vocalist, guitarist, and producer Paul SADLER. The band released their debut full-length studio album "Spiral of Ascension" in 2010. In November 2014 they released their second full length, 'The Whisperer', to widespread acclaim, followed by a couple of short UK tours. Musically, comparisons are often made to OPETH, EMPEROR, MASTODON and CYNIC.

A five star review as I love this album despite not being a fan of extreme metal or harsh/screaming vocals/growling. This album manages to balance these elements that I dislike with great melody, emotion and superb clean vocals, melding these highlights with just the right degree of power, beauty and majesty alongside compositional excellence throughout. Many bands and albums in this genre have me reaching for the skip/eject button very quickly, not here however as the whole album is an engaging joy to listen to. Maybe I am a fan of 'harsh' after all; when done this well? A stunning album!
