3 stars The Dome Event is a live recording that sees Klaus Schulze exploring similar musical territory to Beyond Recall and the two Royal Festival Hall albums. The main ingredients are the same - sampled voices, wind instruments and percussion are blended into a highly beguiling and intriguing soundscape which unfolds and develops at a leisurely pace - 63 minutes in the case of the first track. As good as it sounds (and Schulze has few equals when it comes to this style of music) the main piece is stronger on atmosphere than on content, although samples of what sounds like acoustic guitar are used to conjure up some hauntingly enigmatic fragments of melody in a similar fashion to Gringo Negro from Beyond Recall. At about the 45 minute point some rather 70s sounding sounding synths and sequencers are added to the blend, making an explicit link with his earlier work. It is this which provides the main substance of the album, and gives the final third of the title track some real impetus. The 10 minute After Eleven, presumably the encore, is a more rhythmically driven piece in a similar style to the title track. The Dome Event is non essential, but it is genuinely interesting where the old and new electronic sounds are blended together and it makes extremely good background music for reading or study. One to pick up if you see it as a mid price reissue or in a sale.
