3 stars Long time reader, first time reviewing. I can't believe that no one has submitting anything this album yet. Balance of Power has a definite Dream Theater/Queensryche sound to them but a more melodic metal appeal. Vocals can be annoying especially on "Just Before You Leave" where it sounds like the vocalist is reaching for a note and can't quite get it. The same annoying vocals can be heard on the next track "Wake Up Call". With the exception of the two tracks mentioned the rest of the album is a mix progmetal and progrock.

I first heard the track "I wish you were here" on progrockandmetal.net and really enjoyed it. I was a fairly typical progmetal song but it had appeal to me. It is a bit anthemic which is probably why I like it. After hearing "Chemical Imbalance" on progarchives playlist I had to go back and listen to the album again. I don't know how I could have missed that track. I gave the album another go around and find that not only is this a generally good album but also a good addition to any progmetal fan.

4 stars It's been 20 years since this album was released, and I'm just discovering it now. It's a fantastic blend of power and progressive metal, with some definite influences from Queensryche. It's energetic, complex without being too complex, with strong emotional metal vocals and lots of fun guitar work. If there's a flaw here, it's that the production value isn't perfect--it sounds like a lot of the great power/progressive metal from late '80s or early 90's, with some of the same rough edges. It's mainly a vocals/guitars/drums/bass affair, with little or no keyboards.

Honestly, I'm surprised about how little attention this album has received. Fans of the prog/power metal will find lots to love here. Very solid 4 stars.
