3 stars Obscura is the third album by Gorguts and it elevates their chops by several leagues. Music became extremely complex, inaccessible which I believe hasn't gained more fans than it has lost after departing the old school death- metal. There's no denying about the playing ambition of the band with so many shifts that it must have been hellish difficult to learn to play it. The album is very long (for the death-metal genre) and it made me tired till I reached its end. Naturally such challenging albums are notoriously hard to appreciate at first listen however many listeners will already have a comparison to other technical death metal bands. If I compare this album to Death and "Between the Buried and me" than this one pales because of lack of compositional structure and relatively mediocre songwriting. It feels being randomly developed tracks which lack feelings (positive or negative). The hardcore vocal does not make the experience any better, for me (I have the same issue with Between the buried and me, to a lesser extent). This album is for very hardcore technical metal fans which sacrifice the actual music to well executed playing.
