5 stars Now this is Miles.

This is a collection of great, but not necessarily well known songs recorded by Miles Davis from 1955 to 1970. The songs are placed in chronological order, and therefore, perhaps unintentionally, chronicles Miles transition from pure bebop to fusion.

The bebop songs are fantastic, with bandmates like John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans, they should be. And the sound quality is remarkable, considering when they were recorded.

The best song on the first disk, and somewhat progressive sounding, due to it's chomatic theme and 12/8 time signature, is the title track, "Circle In The Round". It's a 26 minute tour de force that sounds far ahead of it's 1967 recording date. Miles and Wayne Shorter wind exquisite solos around Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock and Joe Beck s rhythms.

On the second disk, we get to hear the band gradually add more electricity into the music, primarily on the keyboards and guitar. The highlight here, and my favorite on the whole collection is "Guinnevere", a song by David Crosby (yeah, that guy), played by Miles as a pure fusion slow funky song. It even has a sitar in it.

Miles' playing throughout is amazing. His melodic touch is perfect on every song.
