3 stars Red is the very first disk from one of my favourite bands, Disillusion. Now naturally, you would expect a debut recording to be below par, e.g. Orchid - Opeth. I don't mind this EP though. True enough, it has nothing on their actual debut album, but it's a very good effort. A good start with many metal elements within and any metal fan would find something here. But that's the thing: it isn't marginally progressive. It's technical in places, yes. But is it progressive? No. Everything on here has been done before and they follow the Extreme Metal stereotype in the sense that they are still evolving at this point.

Production values are quite cheap, but that is expected from a debut EP, so I'm not going to knock down the rating because of it. Red, overall, has no strong points. It is purely average with nothing original, and because I plan to award their mighty Back To Times Of Splendour 5 stars, I'm going to have to award their debut EP 3 stars. A great effort with many promising elements contained that would be heard later on in their music (you really have to listen carefully though).
