3 stars A giant leap from their poor (at least by prog standards) debut album and into the prog woods they flew, Genesis clearly wanted to improve their direction and did by composing longer and more adventurous tracks in the vein of King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator, but unfortunately the production values leaves much to be desired. The songs are long, melodic and dynamic but not too obscure or challenging. The real beauty are in the compositions and the whole album have a calm and warm atmosphere before the final onslaught in "The Knife", which quickly became one of the bands live favorites for years to come. The instrumentation is good for such a young band at the time and their signature pastoral sound is definitely showing in the songs, making this a very good foreword for 'Nursery Cryme', only less violent in tone. A good album overall that should please fans of their early phase especially. Drummer John Mayhew, who backed up these songs fine but was technically limited, and guitarist Ant Phillips jumped ship after this, but was greatly replaced by Phil Collins and Steve Hackett shortly after. Highlights are 'Looking for Someone' and 'Stagnation'. ★★★
