DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

I was actually not interested at all with this DVD because I don't think Dream Theater would be suitable to performed the music of Pink Floyd wholeheartedly because the music of Dream Theater is much complex than Pink Floyd. But when I listened to the CD version, I was quite amazed knowing how the band can perform this legendary album with its soul. I salute Dream Theater for this. So, when there was an event organized by our local rock community, i-Rock!, to watch the DVD together with other rockers in a program called as i-Rock! Thursday Watching Party at Phillips Music Room, South Jakarta, I was there to watch with other 40 fellow rockers (including metal heads!). It was quite fun actually, enjoying the performance of a great band together, so that at the end of the program the audience reviewed how Dream Theater played the Dark Side of The Moon.

The DVD started with an interview with Portnoy about why Dark Side of The Moon was chosen and why it must be at Hammersmith Apollo. It's very interesting interview as Portnoy put it how he was actually not so patient enough to perform drum work for "Us and Them" which moves very slow and monotonous in nature. Well, you can imagine Portnoy who used to play dazzling and jaw dropping drum work and now is performing an "Us and Them" drum work - it must be so boring.

If previously I only listened to the audio version of this cover version, now I was concentrating on how the band plays the classic album in a setting "very close" to when the album was made in mid 70s. I was really enjoying the DVD because the band played it wholeheartedly while the kept their technical skills to match what Pink Floyd did in the past. You might imagine Dream Theater was to play "Home" from "Scene From a Memory" album with its complex arrangements and staccato and now is doing "Us and Them"! But it's truly an entertaining show.

What I was really happy was the fact that having Dream Theater played oldies like Dark Side of The Moon, it opened a gate for younger generation who only know Dream Theater to expand their music horizon through Pink Floyd classic album - so they know who Pink Floyd is. The comments after the show were quite diverse from those who love it and those who do not understand because they were not aware of Pink Floyd before.

Overall, this DVD is highly recommended for both Pink Floyd as well as Dream Theater lovers. Keep on proggin' ..!
