Mud Moths biography
Mud Moths is a recording project conceived between two teenaged brothers based in upstate New York. Clashing the DIY ethic of independent bedroom recordings with unusual song structures and rhythmic/harmonic complexities, MM manage to create a somewhat distinctive sound utilizing extended chord progressions, bright melodies, various recording techniques and experimentation with timbre. Ranging from influences such as lo-fi indie legend R. Stevie Moore, to avant-prog masters like Lars Hollmer, Zappa, and Fred Frith, to more obscure math-rock acts such as FRAC/tional Decomposition, Imelda Marcos and Patife Band, the resulting sound is some type of spastic amateur nightmare of stylistic diversity...which may or may not be appealing.
The two brothers, Ben and Quinn, joined forces after each maintaining their own lo-fi solo projects for some time. The first album, Lepy Däptra, was released in September of 2015 and is an eclectic debut, encompassing signature elements of noise pop with a few progressive tendencies. The second album, simply titled e, sees the group expanding on their initial sound but with more ideas from the realm of avant-prog, raw audio experimentation, and a notable art pop influence, often combining a commonplace, simplified, indie approach with a more complex incorporation of melodic layering, odd time signatures, and dissonance. The third album, Muster Fly, is set for release at the end of 2016 and is very much so a pop album with song-based material, showing that Mud Moths has a dynamic reach for what they choose to record and release. It also must be mentioned that the two brothers record and mix all the parts themselves, making it a 100% independent recording project.
