Teramaze biography
TERAMAZE was founded by teenage guitarist Dean WELLS and some of his schoolmates under the name TERRORMAZE in 1993 when WELLS had only playing guitar for three years, and with the band initially concentrating mainly on thrash metal styles of playing. The initial line-up was Dean WELLS on guitar & backing vocals, Brett REREKURA on lead vocals, Matthew "Matt" RITCHIE on bass, Antonio Tony PAULO on drums and Adam BURNELL on guitar.

Following their early rehearsal sessions, they decided to change their name to TERAMAZE, and subsequently sent some demos they had recorded to the independent Collingwood, Victoria based record label Empire Records. Despite the band's inexperience and rawness, they were signed up by the label and their debut album 'Doxology' was released in 1995. The album was critically acclaimed inside Australia, and TERAMAZE were invited by Rowe Productions, run by Steve ROWE, the singer and bass player of the Christian death metal band MORTIFICATION, to contribute three tracks to the 'Falling On Deaf Ears - Australian Metal Compilation No. 4' compilation.

Adam BURNELL was replaced by Adam WILKIE on guitar in 1997, with vocalist Brett REREKURA leaving the band shortly afterwards. At around the same time, Wells took the decision to add keyboard player and vocalist Clinton JOHANNES to the line-up. The incorporation of a keyboard player into the band allowed TERAMAZE to introduce more progressive aspects into their sound, although thrash metal was still the band's primary modus operandi, and the band's sophomore album 'Tears to Dust' was released by Rowe Productions a year later in 1998. This album was also the beginning of TERAMAZE's shift towards its more melodic tendencies, and the band was favourably compared by some critics with the likes of QUEENSRYCHE, SYMPHONY X, and DREAM THEATER.

When guitarist Adam WILKIE left the band shortly afterwards, as well as continuing to perform on keys and lead vocals, Clinton JOHANNES also filled in as additional guitarist during the recording of a nine-song EP called 'Not the Criminal', which consisted of both live and studio tracks. The EP was released on an imprint of the US classic rock and heavy metal specialist label CMC International in 2001.
