Starfish64 biography
Starfish64 was established in 2006 by German singer-songwriter Dieter Hoffmann. Originally intended to be a vehicle for his solo-work after a number of years as a singer in various bands, starfish64 began recording and publishing music in the singer-songwriter genre at first. Over the years, however, the sound and compositions shifted more and more towards progressive and new art rock. The albums 'Refugees' (2015) and 'An Altered State Of Joy' (2016) both received highly complimentary reviews from several prominent progressive rock websites.

Henrik Kropp (drums and design), followed by Dominik Suhl (guitars & basses) became full members of starfish64 in 2015, and with Martin Pownall (basses & guitars) completing the line-up for the 2018 album 'The Future In Reverse', the former solo-project finally turned into a fully-fledged band.

The earlier releases are quite intense and melancholic, having emotive lyrics which focus on topics reflecting real-life challenges such as loneliness, mental health issues and the challenges of life in general. The often dystopian subject matter of the band's music is always treated with compassion and empathy however, and the messages contained within are consistently delivered in a delicate and haunting manner.

With the release of the 'Refugees' album in 2015, Dieter said that even before the core line-up of the band had started to become established, he had often used other musicians as and when needed to keep things fresh and open. These include both former bandmates and also musicians that he had discovered on line.

The 2018 album 'The Future In Reverse' was recorded using minimal audio equipment, with the various instruments and microphones being essentially just hooked up to a recording software suite installed on a laptop. This allowed the band to exercise a degree of consideration and attention to detail which would have been difficult to achieve in a professional recording studio. Some recording of guitars took place in a garden shed, and a drum kit was set up and recorded in a living room.

Musically, the album covers a lot of different styles, and although Dieter was responsible for the lyrics and basic composition, invaluable input to the final arrangements of the songs was made by all the band members and guest musicians.

However, as of January 2025 he has started to work on new material, and will continue to release it when it is ready under the starfish64 moniker, but will be using the name purely as a solo artist from this point onwards.
