Natural Snow Buildings biography
Natural Snow Buildings are a French post-rock and self-dubbed experimental folk duo based in Vitr�, Brittany since 2004. The group formed in May 1998 while guitarist/vocalists Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte still lived in Paris, about a year after they met at university and began a tentative romantic and musical partnership. Wielding a 4-track recorder and a self-admittedly nonsensical moniker, Natural Snow Buildings started building a sui generis lo-fi world of their own, aesthetically inspired by non-Western folklore, cults, horror films and a multitude of artists like Six Organs of Admittance, Big Blood, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Tarentel and the Trees Community (to name just a few).

A classically-trained cellist and pianist but a self-taught visual artist, Gularte's illustrations adorn the project's handcrafted and limited edition releases, distributed across sympathetic labels like Students of Decay, Blackest Rainbow and especially Ba Da Bing!. While the long shadow of Godspeed You! Black Emperor looms over their discography, only the duo's earliest albums like 2003's Ghost Folks and 2004's The Winter Ray can be said to resemble the Montreal unit's oeuvre, with their work from 2006's seminal The Dance of the Moon and the Sun and beyond more in thrall to Popol Vuh, Flying Saucer Attack, Dzyan, Windy & Carl, Third Ear Band and International Harvester.

Ameziane and Gularte are known for their sprawling and multilayered LPs, featuring droning raga/krautrock-derived tracks summoned from effects-laden strings and ritualistic percussion which occasionally breach sixty minutes, at times blissful and ecstatic and alternately mournful and harrowing. These noisy pieces are contrasted with actual songs of hushed psychedelic acoustic guitar strum, gently sung by Ameziane, whose androgynous voice many a critic has compared to Vashti Bunyan. Ameziane and Gularte explore this drone-folk side in their respective projects TwinSisterMoon and Isengrind. Natural Snow Buildings' output dropped precipitously in the wake of 2016's nearly six-hour Aldebaran, issued on Vulpiano Records, with only an exclusive compilation track following in 2020 as of this writing. It is rumoured the reclusive couple are still recording music but indifferent towards releasing it to the public.
