Kalle biography
Kalle is a Norwegian jazz band founded and led by saxophonist and keyboard player Karl Hjalmar Nyberg. It is the first project of Nyberg, known previously for his collaborations with various stars from the Norwegian noisy jazz scene (including Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Joel Ring and the Megalodon Collective), as a leader and is complemented by three of his compatriots and frequent colleagues, namely guitarist Martin Tonne of Pom Poko, tubaist Heiða Mobeck of Fire! Orchestra and drummer Veslemøy Narvesen of Mall Girl. Kalle's self-titled debut album (alternatively titled "Introducing Kalle") was released in 2020 by Jazzland Recordings Norway, which called it a "a carcrash of jazz, indie rock and improvised music". The combination of ethereal synth chords, electronically infused hip-hop style beats, irregular rhythms, hocketed melodies and Mobeck's tuba taking the place of a normal bass guitar creates a unique and unpredictable sound, that can at most be compared to Gentle Giant donning the timbral language of some of the most far out nu jazz acts like Mats/Morgan, Sungazer or Domi & JD Beck.
