Sketchshow biography
Sketchshow is a Southampton, UK based band, formed in early 2016, whose music blends elements of math rock, funk, prog, and pop-punk. Originally a purely instrumental band, the early line-up consisted of Joel Bamigboye on bass, Adam Curran and Luke Phillips on guitar, with Scott van der Leeden completing the formation on drums & percussion.

Adam and Joel had met at Southampton University in 2015, and were always sending music back and forth including some of the songs that Adam had written. Later on that year Adam decided that he wanted to form a band around the material that he'd been working on, and posted online to find additional members. Luke replied and became the second guitar player, with Scott becoming the drummer shortly after.

Their stated influences and favourites include artists from a variety of music genres, such as Louis Cole, Tom Misch, Arcane Roots, The Killers, Snarky Puppy, Green Day, and Genesis, which shows how the four musicians actually come from totally unrelated musical backgrounds.

They played their first gig in the Southampton University Student Union (The Bridge) on 25th May 2016, and although they started off as an instrumental act, they always felt that their songs required a vocalist to really bring them to life.

After a year of searching, and many auditions of prospective candidates, the band finally found their singer, Satin Bailey, at the beginning of 2017. Satin also became the band's lyric writer, and their first gig as a five piece was at the Talking Heads independent music venue in Southampton on Sunday 4th June 2017.

They then began recording the songs that were eventually to become their debut EP with Daly George at The Ranch Production House, Southampton on 14th June 2017. A single entitled 'Every Excuse' was released at the beginning of March 2018, with the 5-track 'Patchwork' EP following on 6th April that year.

The EP was very well received, and the band gigged regularly in the local area to promote it. However, their bassist Joel Bamigboye left at the end of October 2018, with the band due to re-enter The Ranch Production House to begin working on their debut full album just a couple of months later in December.

Initially they managed to recruit another bassist who was based at Chichester University, but he couldn't commit to the band long term and left two weeks before the band were due to start recording the new album. This meant that bass duties at the recording sessions had to be shared by the two guitarists in the band, and on some of the tracks a session bassist whom they had known at Southampton University named Will Sales was used.

Will had been running the music society at Southampton University in 2016/2017, and Adam & Joel were part of his committee at the time. However, Will didn't know the Sketchshow drummer Scott van der Leeden at this point. As the recording process continued during the first half of 2019, Will gradually became more and more involved with the activities of Sketchshow, and he was officially announced as their new bassist in August of that year.

Three singles from the forthcoming album entitled 'Chrysalis', 'Inns�i' and 'Delight' were released in February, March and April 2021 respectively, with the debut full album 'Waves' following on 7th May of that year, with former bassist Joel Bamigboye contributing a guest keyboard solo on track 5.

Further gigs to promote the new album were performed during the summer and autumn of 2021, but their gig at the Fiddler's Elbow in Camden, London on 31st October was the last one with Satin and Scott in the band, as both decided to depart immediately afterwards due to changes in circumstances since they originally joined the band.

There has been no official announcement to say that the band has been terminated, but as of late August 2024 we must assume that they are on indefinite hiatus. Two tracks that didn't make it onto the 'Waves' album were released as 'Crests (B-Sides)' in early December 2021. Their music would appeal to fans of acts such as Bent Knee or A Formal Horse.
