Controlled Bleeding biography
Launched in 1978, Controlled Bleeding was the unclassifiable experimental rock project of US multi-instrumentalist and high school English teacher Paul Lemos. The self-declared music obsessive started Controlled Bleeding while a junior in college and temporarily living in Boston, Massachusetts. The project truly took off when Long Island-native Lemos moved back to New York City, namely the suburb of Massapequa, where he sought to jump into the exciting fray of the burgeoning punk and no wave movements which inspired him. Controlled Bleeding's "classic" lineup consisted of Lemos joined by former neighbour and percussionist Chris Moriarty along with oddball vocalist (and fellow drummer) Joe Papa, a partnership which lasted from 1983 to Moriarty's departure in 1994, finally concluding with Papa's death in 2009 (which followed a year-and-a-half after Moriarty's passing).

Perhaps the North American counterpart to the legendary Coil, Controlled Bleeding are duly categorised as Eclectic Prog thanks to their wild stylistic shifts, the result of Lemos' creative whims and self-admitted "short attention span." Across over thirty albums, Controlled Bleeding dabbled in neoclassical darkwave (Songs From the Drain, 1987; Music for Gilded Chambers, 1988), harsh power electronics (Knees and Bones, 1985; The Drowning, 1993), dub (Dub Songs From a Shallow Grave, 1995), industrial dance (Penetration, 1992), gothic art rock (Inanition; Songs from the Shadows, 1996) and kosmische dark ambient (Headcrack, 1986; The Poisoner, 1997), while their career began and ended as a jazz-fusion-cum-avant-prog unit (Before the Quiet, 2008; Larva Lumps and Baby Bumps, 2016). Indeed, Lemos' love for progressive rock was the common thread through Controlled Bleeding's various eras, with his distinctive guitar style influenced by John McLaughlin, Terje Rypdal, Robert Fripp and Fred Frith. Controlled Bleeding's prog bona fides were further bolstered by their covers of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, Genesis and the Doors, mostly found on tribute compilations.

Controlled Bleeding also directly collaborated with talented names from the worlds of avant-prog and post-rock. Known for blowing off steam through Swans/Godflesh-esque spin-off projects like Fat Hacker and Skin Chamber, Lemos pivoted towards noisy free jazz, recruiting Papa and one of his favourite drummers, the Ruins' Tatsuya Yoshida, for 2003's Breast Fed Yak trio. In 2010, Lemos managed to record with his other favourite drummer, the Flying Luttenbachers' Weasel Walter, along with PAK's Ron Anderson, as he began to reconstitute Controlled Bleeding in the wake of Moriarty and Papa's deaths. After forming a new lineup featuring Dystopia One's Mike Bazini, Things Outside the Skin's Chvad SB and Tony Meola (who drummed for Controlled Bleeding back in the early 1980s), Lemos contacted his friend Matteo Uggeri's band Sparkle in Grey, resulting in 2015's split album Perversions of the Aging Savant.

After four decades of pragmatic label-hopping, Controlled Bleeding's final years were spent signed to Artoffact Records, which began a CD reissue campaign in the mid-2010s, documenting remastered and remixed versions of the band's vinyl albums from their most creatively fertile period of 1985 to 1988.

Lemos announced the end of Controlled Bleeding through their Facebook page on February 11, 2020, leaving a vast trove of challenging and rewarding music for fans of the more occult corners of avant-prog and progressive electronic.
