Mike Dickson biography
Mike Dickson is a Scottish composer, arranger and keyboard player from Edinburgh who is known particularly for his affinity and advocacy of the Mellotron. After acquiring this instrument in 1998 he embarked on several musical projects including collaborations with Greg Amov and Danielle Ashley, and playing keyboards for the American progressive electronic band Systems Theory. It was near the latter's dissolution in 2009 that Dickson started work on his most acclaimed solo album Mellotronworks: a collection of classical music pieces played entirely on a Mellotron, which could be seen as the instrument's answer to Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach. The album was praised by, among others, Robert Fripp, who was quoted as saying 'I would not have believed the Mellotron capable of this'. Seven Mellotron-centered companion albums were produced and released by him around this same time, after which Dickson decided to broaden his music's timbral and stylistic pallette, with his recent projects ranging from synthesized Berlin School-inspired sequences to long-form conceptual ambient works.
