Giant Brain biography
US band Giant Brain was formed sometime back in the 2000's, according to the band description following an episode involving artist Mark Dancey painting his impressions of what the brain of musician Andy Sutton looked like. That painting kind of established the band name and a little bit of a concept, and events started to transpire from that point and onwards.

The initial incarnation of the band revolved around the nucleus of Andy Sutton (bass, programming, keyboards), Philip Dürr (guitars, vocals) and Al Sutton (loops, programming), and with a liberal amount of guest musicians involved in the recording process the end result became the band's debut album "Plume", which was released on the Small Stone Recordings label in 2007.

Following this the band stabilized their line-up a bit, with Eric Hoegemeyer (drums, percussion, programming, keyboards) joining as a permanent member and the band recording material for their second album without too many additional musicians involved. They were ready with their second album "Thorn of Thrones" in 2009, and once again with Small Stone Recordings being their label of choice.

The band eased up their studio endeavors for the next decade or so, but following the passing of guitarist Philip Dürr in 2019 the remaining band members decided that finalizing the creation of the material they were working with at the time for a final album was in order as the band's last musical will and testament. For this third production many additional musicians were again involved, and the result was released as the album "Grade A Gray Day" in 2023, again with Small Stone Recordings as their label of choice.

Giant Brain was an important band in the psychedelic and progressive rock scene of their home turf of Detroit, and they have left a legacy of albums that initially had a bit more of a krautrock style but that gradually developed into more of a psychedelic space rock orientation.
