THE KING & EYE: RMX

In terms of style, this remix is a tad similar to that of their WB:RMX (remix of unreleased 1971 album) , as some of the songs got reworked in some kind of dance and club music beat. Here however the original work isn't as avantgarde and acoustic, and I personally found the original King & Eye from 1989 too monotone for real enjoyment, heavy . What else doesn't help is that RESIDENTS didn't make the remix on their own but collaborated with german producer PARALYZER who is working mainly in genres of trance, industrial, electro, drumm n bass and the likes whose elements are present strongly in this remix. So there is an added layer of electronic sound in music which greatly reduces the original menace in original renderings of ELVIS PRESLEY's songs or the story of the original album. Oh, and auto tuning doesn't help at all. Not all songs from "King & Eye" were remixed but there are a few others in this same RMX style floating around in forms of bonus EP's and such ("Blue Suede Shoes" and "Hound Dog" for example) , and there are 4 songs here that weren't on the original 1989 album: "Jailhouse Rock", "Surrender", "Don't" and "Can't Help Falling In Love"

So, does this collection of beats have any good sides? If you're into this kind of music, it may be worth of a listen, seeing as most of fans will probably be disappointed. But, If you fancied their endeavor "Kaw-Liga" with the MICHAEL JACKSON's "Billie Jean" tune then give this one a listen as it's more of that sometimes catchy dance club vibe (as I recall "Devil In Disguise" might be the only exception with added aggressive guitars to chorus, so this version has more sort of metal/shock rock feel to it). Everyone else beware, not representative of their work even the slightest bit.

So if you take a 3 star album full of Elvis covers that are done in a dark, minimalistic and sometimes sarcastic manner, and remix them so that they have very predictable dance beats behind them, do you think you can make it better? Well, all of the above traits in the original album were the only positives about the so-so album, and these things are completely erased from these remixes, except for the crazy guitar solo in "Devil in Disguise". Other than that, this is just too predictable and do nothing to add to the originals.

I was going to give this album 2 stars, but I was only half way through it when I made that decision. As the album continues, it gets even more annoying. Thus, it gets 1 star. Silly Residents anyway. That's all I got to say about this one.
