3 stars Listening diary 22nd June, 2021: Momentum - Fixation, At Rest (atmospheric sludge metal, 2010)

A bit of a mess, but there are the ingredients that made their second album so compelling here too. What I like about these guys is they push beyond the typical atmospheric sludge metal fare and frequently abandon the genre's boringly strict limitations, incorporating some elements of industrial, prog, avant-garde and even full sections of no metal at all. The vocals are the highlight, as they are on the follow up, with both the deep baritone bellow and raw harsh vocals carrying much of the material - but it's without the same level of production. But all these disparate pieces can end up sounding a little directionless at times, which is something I'm glad they ironed out later.

6.5 (3rd listen)
