5 stars Uphill Work is a quirky and wonderful little band from Moscow, who has dropped a few records of fun and neat crossover prog. Most of the album is Lev Gankine singing rather strangely and jovially over some excellent prog that keeps to his odd rhythm and style. Much enjoyment is to be found listening to his vocals and stories as backed by the nice music. Gankine's own keys stand as the best part of the sound. But then there's "Snowing Down South"... some dramatic keys lead into a darker and more crazed Lev, and heavy guitars are the main instrument going forward. The drums get their chance to shine. This whole bonkers awesomeness continues on for eighteen whole minutes. If you thought that any of the earlier, quirky tracks were the best parts, then prepare to be blown away. At the end, this is a fun, spectacular album that shows a range from lighter and pixie sounds to something rather harder, off the wall, and comparatively dour. More than worth a try or purchase.
