3 stars In my mid-teenage years TALK TALK was among my favourite bands, alongside with other contemporary artists from Dire Straits and Kate Bush to U2 and The Police - and the rapidly expanding number of 70's prog classics. Yes, I still think of my early music-listening years with fondness. And this single was probably my introduction to Talk Talk.

'It's My Life' is the energetic title track of their second album, which still represents the group's synth pop era. But it was a notable step forward from the rather hollow debut The Party's Over (1982). The songwriting - mainly by the vocalist Mark Hollis - is tight and increasingly original, and the production crisp and colourful. The soundscape in this song features very exciting, exotic nuances. The song leans heavily on the catchy chorus which does sound quite plastic, but the overall atmosphere has something more extraordinary.

The B-side has 'Does Caroline Know?', a slightly surreal and hypnotic little synth pop oddity; in a way it would be an ideal B-side song, if it was also a non-album track (compare to some MARILLION B-siders such as 'Live Forever'). But since it is included in the album too, the single does not earn the fourth star from me. Prog purists will stay away in the first place!

3 stars Talk Talk's "It's My Life" from 1984 is an album of enduring value that has enriched the musical landscape and enchanted listeners with its exceptional compositions. It is a masterpiece that remains as relevant and impressive today as when it was first released. With the recent passing of singer Mark Hollis, this album takes on an extra emotional weight.

"It's My Life" showcases a perfect synthesis of pop and new wave, with Talk Talk creating its own unique sound that has effortlessly stood the test of time. The compositions on this album are refined and infused with melodic beauty. Tracks like the opener Dum Dum Girl and the successful single Such A Shame are catchy and compelling with their irresistible hooks and layered arrangements. The musical accompaniment creates an atmosphere that is both melancholic and uplifting, filled with inventive synths, prominently present bass playing, and distinctive guitar work. Hauntingly beautiful is the poignant ballad Renée, a song that stays with you forever after just one listen.

The album continues with the iconic title track "It's My Life," a captivating song that embodies the feeling of individuality and self-expression. The somewhat nasal sound of Hollis' voice, full of emotion and depth, immediately grabs you from the first line.

It is crucial to highlight Hollis' musical vision, as he was both the lead singer and one of the key songwriters of the band. His unique talent for creating lyrical melodies and poetic lyrics is evident in every track on this album. Hollis' distinctive vocal expression touches your deepest feelings, making each song an intensely personal experience. Listen to him in the percussive Does Caroline Know? ? what a remarkable voice.

With Hollis' passing, the music world loses an extraordinarily talented artist. His influence on music, both with Talk Talk and in his solo work, will always be remembered. "It's My Life" remains tangible evidence of his genius and ability to create timeless music.

In summary, "It's My Life" is an excellent album that has withstood the test of time and leaves a profound impression. It is a tribute to the brilliant compositions of the band and the unforgettable talent of Mark Hollis. This album will always hold a special place in the hearts of music lovers worldwide.
