ON THE THRESHOLD OF ETERNITY

Constantly I feel surprised by the bunch of bands and artists that have something new to share, and even more surprised when I see those musicians are from my country, like in this case this guy named Fernando Gómez, with the alias of FRHXO, who has released so far a couple of EPs with a post- rock tendency. It is a shame I did not even know about his existence, but now I can support his music and talk about him with a review. In 2012 he released "On the Threshold of Eternity", an 8-song EP that lasts only 25 minutes, so the songs are short, but they are pretty nice.

This project is only himself, so everything you will listen is composed and performed by Gómez, a talented Mexican musician. The album opens with "Aesthetic", a nice and soft track that starts slow but a minute later the guitar and other instruments add different sounds, different textures that make it a pleasant listen. Before reaching the second minute, it has an explosion in which keyboards enter, adding a kind of symphonic prog sound to the music. "Waking Life" reminds me of the film with the same title, I don't know if FRXHO was inspired by it. Anyway, the music is again nice, calm, relaxing, short but pure, a nice breath of fresh post rock air.

"Vicis Ad Mundani Orbis" starts soft but dark at the same time with the sound of piano and a synth background, later guitar appears. After a minute the music becomes more emotional, stronger for a brief passage, then the delicacy returns and the piano sounds a bit louder, but gently nevertheless. "Holding a Sigh" is one of the shortest here, only two minutes, but two minutes of nice post rock in its soft side. "Nouveau Depart" starts with a catchy and repetitive piano part, later drums and guitar join and together build a structure and the music makes highs and lows in question of emotional scale.

The reprise of "Aesthetic" continues now, a short track that works as an interlude, not bad. "Oslo" starts a bit noisy, like some space communication, then it disappears and a whole new sound begins, with guitars, bass, drums and keyboards creating a wonderful song, full of nuances and emotions. This is my favorite track, very touchy. And the EP finishes with "Twilight on the Crimson Sunset", which is a calm acoustic guitar driven track, that lead us to feel relaxed and rest. A peaceful track.

Well, it is nice to know a guy from my country is creating nice music, I hope to get in touch with him soon and hope to see him with new releases soon. My final grade will be three stars.
