WEIGHTLESS AT DAWN

As it always happens, when you think that a year has already told every musical story it can, after all expectations are met, in all that hodge-podge of great stuff a new name appears from out of nowhere. A name which certainly has a lot to offer. Truthseeker appears to be such name for me.

Weightless at Dawn is the first release of this Boston duo, which consists of Brendan James Hayter (songwriter/bassist) and Alex Fewell (drums) and is an introduction for a full-lentgh which is set to be released in 2012. Truthseeker is completely instrumental chemistry, with influences which run high from dark rock, ambient, doom, post-rock, metal to "squeezed" prog rock.

I don't know if their formula for success is having a death metal drummer playing slow rock beats or a wide range of influences or whatever, but the soundimage breaking out from the speakers is astonishing. Deep atmospherics in Submerged or Katatoniasque Storm, the mixture of ambient and dark rock in Daybreak, doomy Permafrost and symphonically semi- acoustic Through the Waves are impressive ingredients of this 5-track EP.

The prologue has been written and according to the same, the first chapter in the Truthseeker book is with good looks to become the groundbreaking record in the running opus. My eyes are on you, Truthseeker!

Great atmospheric post-metal!

Since I first listened about Truthseeker I was attracted by their name, so after reading they had their debut EP for free-download, I did not hesitate and got it, plus, they were suggested by my friend Nick from Prog-Sphere, so it is a guarantee. This is an American instrumental duo with a sound oriented to post-metal, with wonderful changes in tempo and mood, and great additional atmospheres. Their EP is entitled "Weightless at Dawn" and consists of five tracks.

It opens with "Daybreak", a track with both, soft and heavy moments wonderfully intercalated, creating diverse emotions in the listener. The guitars are always great, well chosen for the different passages; and the post-metal sound is also evident. It leads to "Permafrost", which is a seven-minute track with a clear structure, maybe repetitive and without surprises, but the thing here is that they add different notes and elements while the seconds pass, so the song is never monotone, in spite of its not-so-complex structure.

"Storm" is very visual, I actually imagine a scene of people running and trying to cover from a storm (in its literal, and metaphoric sense), and when the images comes to my mind, it means the music successes. The sounds is dark, heavy in moments but with the rock element present all the time. "Submerged" is the shortest composition with only two minutes, and it is also the softest, slowest, most atmospheric and delicate.

The EP finishes with "Through the Waves", which actually starts with a sound of waves. Seconds later the guitars and their heavy, post-metal sound appear and begin to create a good melody, which in moments remind me a bit of some Opeth passages. The song progresses little by little, until it calms down after two and a half minutes and gives us a soft passage that works as a prelude for the last explosion. So the last two minutes are intense and emotional, creating a wonderful end.

Very good debut EP, worth downloading and listening. Now I look forward to hear a full- length album of theirs. Three stars.
