HEY JUPITER

After the disappointing "Under the Pink" album, Tori came back with her greatest work in my view, the 90s baroque-flavoured romance exorcism "Boys for Pele." The "Hey Jupiter" maxi-single featured "The Dakota Version" of the song, with a techno beat and different arrangement. It's not an improvement over the album version unfortunately, but Jupiter is such a rapturously beautiful song it's almost impossible to destroy. For extras here we are treated to four live tracks. "Sugar" has a cute intro where Tori teases the boys in the audience about how slow they are to figure out women. "Honey" is a track that she was booted off "Under the Pink" in what she claims was a huge mistake on her part. Not sure why, it's pretty stock Tori, nothing special. "Professional Widow" live is called the "Merry Widow" version and is rather haunting, with bleak keys and a breathless sounding, distressed vocal. This is pretty theatrical and exciting as Tori gets pretty "out there." Finally there is an interesting closer with a cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." A daring choice and while it won't replace the Judy Garland version as the iconic one, it does capture the sense of loss and loneliness present in the original. This is a decent extended single but nothing essential, pretty much of interest to fans.
