ISOHYET

This is the debut of the Portuguese band Oblique Rain. It's a self-released album that includes 7 tracks in about 47 minutes. Progressive Metal is the main genre embraced by the band. The most notorious influences are Porcupine Tree, Katatonia (post-Doom albums) and Opeth (in its lighter side). Good musical technique, as required in the style, captivating melodies, melodic and safe voice (with the occasional guttural voice), strong ambiences. The overall atmosphere is very emotional and melodic but the band does not forget the Metal component with some stronger riffs and a powerful rhythm section. Even the production, usually something "loose" in Metal in Portugal, is above average (courtesy of Daniel Cardoso of Anathema / ex-Head Control System / ex-Sirius, who, incidentally, recorded the drums). Despite the obvious influences, the band makes a very interesting record. I believe that in a second record the band will be able to better assimilate their influences and make an even better album. They do have the potential, that is clear. Overall, I really enjoyed this record. For some time now I have not heard a Progressive Metal record, made in Portugal, with this quality. A work that will please fans of the names already mentioned or others like Marillion, Ayreon, Tool, Three, Dream Theater and even Audioslave.

18th May, 2021: Oblique Rain - Isohyet (progressive metal, 2007)

Not quite as good as their second album, which is a bit of an underrated gem of Opethian prog metal, but this is still a nice cut of gothic prog in the vein of a band like Wolverine or The Provenance. There's a great melancholic overtone to the songwriting, even if the riffs are perhaps not the most creative. I also really love the final ambient track, which feels like a bold piece for a band of this genre to be attempting.
