4 stars The only reason I give Brain Salad Surgery four stars instead of five is that I absolutely and utterly detest Benny the Bouncer. Apart from that, it would easily be a five-star album.

Jerusalem is one of my favorite songs. I don't care what anyone says, I think it is beautiful and very emotional. When Greg Lake sings "I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand...", it gives me chills every single time. Toccata is very strange and intense, but it is very original and marvellously executed. Still...You Turn Me On is an excellent song, and I love it although it recieves criticism by many for being the obligatory Greg Lake ballad on the album. Karn Evil Nine is ELP's second- best masterpiece, behind Tarkus. First Impression: Part Two is unfortunately used ad nauseum at many sporting events and such, but it is still a good song. I prefer Part One personally. Second Impression is really excellent, and shows off Kieth Emerson's talent nicely. Third Impression is also great, and the ending produces an unsettling feeling that makes you feel like computers might just be taking over the world.

Kieth Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer are all individually wonderful musicians, and together they are even better. Their sheer virtuosity is what makes this album so good. I really would like to give it five stars if not for Benny the Bouncer.

The artwork on the album cover really is worth mentioning as well. H.R. Gieger's work is really disturbing sometimes, but it suits this music perfectly.
