3 stars Defining alternative progressive metal

5R6 are a new Ukrainian band whose sound could not tell their origin. Rather, someone would swear that these guys have come out a revived Seattle scene (if there was one!). With strong roots in the US alternative rock/metal scene, 5R6 come to establish the connections between "traditional alternative" and progressive metal.

With a purely modern sound, up-tempo beats and lots of enthusiasm, 5R6 have recently released their second EP "+6.5 and Brighter". They draw influences from 90's alternative rock/metal monsters such as Alice In Chains (even more so on the vocal style - listen to A Dam Breaks Open and Cold Shine) and Soundgarden, modern stoner rock practices and progressive metal from both the "traditional" scene but more from the so-called "new wave" (e.g. Tool, especially on the opening track). The riffing style of Mastodon makes its appearance ever so often, albeit on a softer tone (see title track).

During its 20 minutes, the album flows smoothly without losing interest at any point, with sufficient changes of mood and speed, supported by some excellent bass lines. I was happy to conclude that this is not another Tool clone, as it is so often the case with bands experimenting in this sphere; saying that, there is room for improvement in the "originality" category, although my initial feeling is that this will come with time.

High quality alternative rock/metal with a (massive) progressive metal twist, this would appeal to Alice in Chains and Tool fanatics. 3.5 alternative stars deserved!

Best moments: K, +6.5 and Brighter
