4 stars A much maligned album in the TD canon, many consider it their worst effort. Swimming against the stream as usual:-),I have always loved it and think it's a marvellous example of what TD for me is all about: Mood. TD's music is mood music more than anything,it has little to do with traditional songs structures and melodies but everything to do with establishing a certain mood, atmosphere, ambiance or whatever one chooses to call it. And considering that "Rockoon" is a concept album about life in big cities,I think they succeed in establishing just the right kind of big city mood on this album to make the concept come to life, and consequently the album must be viewed as a success. It really speaks to me of city life and I use it often in the walkman and it works perfectly against the backdrop of the city in which I live so to me they have captured city life to perfection on "Rockoon". "Lifted Veil" is the only odd one out, first of all because it breaks the mood by not seeming to belong on this album and also because of it's quite staggeringly banal melody and a quite hideous saxophone that would make even Kenny G blush. Sounds more than anything like a reject from a Disney movie soundtrack, and it holds back the 5th star from this otherwise excellent album.
