LOST IN THE NEW REAL

Lost in the new real is the 3rd solo album by the Dutchman. Although it is a considered to be a prog album, it has a lot of rock/pop elements that give the album a special radio-pleasant feel.

The reason why I have checked out the album were its high ratings allocated by the progarchives fans. The first song Ive heard was " Lost in the new real" that initially captured my interest, especially the funny comments by Arjen in partcular sections of the "full song preview video" on youtube. Soon I realized that in fact music is genious and after quite a few replays it still is one of my favorite songs produced in perhaps 5 years.

The album is about how humans are lost in the new world that is formed and dictated by the technology, everything is computer generated and it is nearly impossible to distinguish between reality and whatever contradicts it. The main question to be born is whether there is purpose in realizing new ideas in the world everyrhing could be achieved with a simple click.

There are 2 CDs that have to be separated. The 2nd consist of songs that anyhow didn't fit on the main disc. Half of the CD 2 are covers.

The album(CD 1) opens up with a narration by the Dutch movie star Rutger Hauer(especially known for his role in Blade runner). Actually, every song on disc 1 develops from a piece of narration. The fact is, that there is no song that would demand any effort to get into. Main body of the album consists of songs with pop melodies with addition of hard rock, metal, space rock elements. Classical instruments such as violin, flute are important part of the athmosphere creation. Particular parts or moments of the album were surely inspired by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen. Even names of the songs resemble some of these bands (when Im hundred sixtyfour, pink beatles in a purple zeppelin?)

Gradually, we come to the last song of first disc, also with a length above 10 minutes, the longest one. "Lost in the new real" doesn't have any chorus, new ideas and themes are evolved from each other. The song has it all: nice melodies(important part of its creation are violin, flute), progressive elements, space athmosphere created by MINIMOOG, excellent backing vocals by Wilmer Waarbroek that remind a lot of early Queen as the author confirms himself. The song absolutely is an epic.

The second album is not so strong, but it is logical, its only meant as an addition to the main disc. Althoug album has only 2 "masterpiece" songs, in my opinion "Lost in the new real" and "Our imperfect race" from the 2nd disc, as a whole is achieved strong conceptual album for the prog album of 2012 race.
