3 stars 4th April, 2021: Circa Survive - On Letting Go (post-prog, 2007)

I'd probably guess at saying it's eight years since I last listened to this - and to my own surprise I actually remembered a whole lot of it. Circa Survive were a band I never really understood, but in my teenage years I tried really hard to understand, as this was an age before I realised I could just move on from an artist and decide I didn't like them much. I feel like I listened to this an awful lot for an album I never really liked, maybe partly because I found it for $2 in a bargain bin and really liked the CD packaging. On the music - I guess my biggest issue is how it somehow manages to be memorable without being catchy. There are so many nothing melodies on this, and yet something about Green's obnoxiously nasally delivery helps them to imprint in my brain, despite minimal musical merit. It's not a bad album, and I don't actually think there's anything I really dislike about it, but it's also just so pedestrian in the other direction as well. Perhaps it'll be another eight years before I next revisit it.
